Four children—aged 12, 10, 7 and 4—lost both parents in the Tollen attack. The youngest was himself critically wounded.

Manipur officials have now signed an agreement promising to initiate an NIA investigation, provide his medical care, compensate the family and support all four siblings until adulthood. Central security forces are also promised for vulnerable villages.

These are meaningful commitments, and I hope every one of them is honoured. But a signed agreement is the beginning of accountability, not its completion.

The deadline is 30 days. This is exactly the kind of promise that should be written down, dated—and checked again.
