We started TheSharedRoot because concern for another person should survive differences of religion, caste and nationality.

Here, we follow minority rights, freedom of expression and abuses of power across South Asia, with India as our main focus.

We’ll share clear opinions, show the reporting behind them, and return to stories when something changes. When we get something wrong, we’ll correct it openly.

We’ll also pay attention to people who stand beside their neighbours when doing so takes courage.

After more than eight years in jail, Jagtar Singh Johal’s trial had examined only 40 of 123 witnesses.

The Delhi High Court has now granted him bail in seven NIA cases, citing prolonged incarceration and the prosecution’s delay in producing verifiable evidence. An earlier acquittal on similar allegations also weighed in his favour.

Johal still faces grave charges connected to alleged Khalistan Liberation Force activity. Bail is not acquittal, and the evidence must be tested fairly. But that principle works both ways: an accusation under a terror law cannot become a substitute for completing a trial.

He had not yet been confirmed released while the court finalised his bond and conditions. After eight years, even bail remains unfinished business.
