ON THIS DATE IN 2005: This statement was issued by NWS meteorologist Robert Ricks (from the Slidell office) at mid-morning on August 28, 2005.

At the time, Katrina was a category five hurricane in the Gulf, similar in strength to Camille in 1969. It would make landfall the next day as a category three at Waveland Mississippi. 

Some thought this “doomsday” statement was a hoax. Unfortunately, it wasn’t... as everyone would find out the next day.

Venezuela Earthquake — 25th June 2026 Frequency clearance requested
Jun 25, 2026 · Emergency Comms · Greg, G0DUB, International Amateur Radio Union Following the fatal earthquake in Venezuela on Wednesday at 5:04 PM local time (10:04 PM UTC), local radio amateurs have asked that that all amateur radio colleagues in the Americas and the rest of the world protect the following frequency used by Venezuelan amateur radio operators:
40 m: 7135 kHz.
Domingo L. Hernández Lima, YV5IZE, director of the Venezuelan Radio Club’s National Emergency Network reports that a large part of the capital is without electricity and communication systems are operating on battery power. They were already activating their emergency shortwave (HF) frequency and also using digital frequencies and communication modes.
At the same time, the emergency communications coordinators of amateur radio operators from Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and other countries in the region, as well as members of the Board of Directors of the International Amateur Radio Union Region 2 (IARU R2), remain on standby to provide any assistance that may be needed.

Here’s what’s gonna happen. Yall keep driving like a horde of idiots and 2 things are gonna happen. All of you chasers making day rates… fired. These companies and people don’t want the PR disaster that’s gonna follow a chaser death who was getting paid $150 a day to be reckless. They’re gonna use the main guys. And that’s it.
All of you chasers that livestream. Banned. Dangerous activities and TikTok is already enforcing this. YouTube and all other socials will follow. There goes that.
Then…. The entire thing gets government scrutiny. You can make the argument that they can’t control chasing because it’s unconstitutional, but I promise you. Our government will find a way. They always do.

Please. Drive responsibly. Check your fellow chasers when they go a little too far. Don’t ridicule. Just grab em by the ear and tell em, “you’re being a dumbass, stop.” That’s how we handle that.

Look I LOVE doing this. But. We have to do this with grace and honor. Not like a bunch of rabid animals. It IS sustainable, but everyone can’t just dogpile every storm and block roads for miles with convergence.
Not everyone needs to zero meter. If that’s what you want to do then fine. Just understand it’s a dance with death. I think we’ve all gotten so numb to the real dangers. It’s not just the tornadoes. There are 10,000 ways to die while storm chasing.

If you’re new, or relatively new. Don’t feel pressured to be like everyone else. Don’t be scared to ask and learn because here’s the truth. We’re all still learning and most of us about died dozens of times to get where we are and learn how to be good at this. It took me a few years and some close calls too.

Just take it slow and be yourself.

The views a couple miles away are usually just as great as the views up close.

Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 7 days.

Today, May 15, marks the first day of the routine issuance of the
Atlantic basin Tropical Weather Outlook in 2026. This product
describes significant areas of disturbed weather and their
potential for tropical cyclone formation during the next seven
days. The Tropical Weather Outlook is issued from May 15 through
November 30 each year. The issuance times of this product are 2 AM,
8 AM, 2 PM, and 8 PM EDT. After the change to standard time in
November, the issuance times are 1 AM, 7 AM, 1 PM, and 7 PM EST.

A Special Tropical Weather Outlook will be issued to provide
updates, as necessary, in between the regularly scheduled issuances
of the Tropical Weather Outlook. Special Tropical Weather Outlooks
will be issued under the same WMO and AWIPS headers as the regular
Tropical Weather Outlooks.
