He joined Azov at 18. His first battle was the defense of Mariupol.

Looking back, he says Russia didn’t win the city with better tactics. It buried it under overwhelming firepower.

“If there was a three-story building or an eleven-story building in front of our position, they wouldn’t advance until it was destroyed. They didn’t care whether civilians or soldiers were inside. They destroyed everything because they were afraid to move forward.”

On April 1, 2022, shrapnel struck his only functioning eye and wounded him across his body. He was evacuated to the field hospital inside Azovstal.

He says the bunker was harder to endure than the fighting itself.

There was almost no medicine. No space. Wounded men screaming around the clock. Nothing anyone could do to help them.

He asked to return to the front.

Then came the order to lay down their arms.

“We knew exactly who we were surrendering to. There can be no agreements with these people. Russians always lie.”

The cameras showed an orderly evacuation.

What they didn’t show was what happened the moment the cameras were gone.

“As soon as we boarded the buses, their soldiers reloaded their rifles and told us: if anything happens, we’ll kill you all right here.”

Pavlo was taken first to Olenivka, then through prisons in Donetsk, Horlivka, Rostov-on-Don, Moscow, Vorkuta and finally Kharp, beyond the Arctic Circle.

In one prison, 25 men were packed into a cell built for ten. They weren’t allowed to sit down.

“I stood in that cell for eleven months.”

In Horlivka he was tortured into confessing to murders he had never committed.

Electrocuted with a Soviet-era field telephone.

Beaten until he signed.

Sentenced to life imprisonment.

Through it all, one thing struck him almost as much as the violence.

Russian propaganda.

State television replayed footage of the same destroyed British Challenger tank for more than a week, presenting it each time as a new victory.

“They weren’t just lying to us. They were lying to their own people.”

In October 2024, after almost three years in captivity, Pavlo was finally exchanged.

The first days of freedom felt unreal.

“One moment you’re in a cell, getting beaten every time the door opens. Then suddenly people are carrying you on their shoulders.”

After rehabilitation, he had the right to leave the military.

Instead, he returned to Azov.

“Continuing to serve is my way of honoring my brothers who fell in Mariupol and those still in captivity.”
