Despite becoming one of the greatest athletes in Olympic history, Jesse Owens discovered that four gold medals did not guarantee opportunity or financial security in America.

At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Owens stunned the world by winning gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4x100 meter relay. His victories directly challenged Adolf Hitler’s ideology of racial superiority and made him an international symbol of athletic excellence. Yet when Owens returned home, he was still confronted by the realities of segregation and racial discrimination.

Endorsement opportunities were scarce for Black athletes during that era, and professional sports offered few ways to earn a living. Like many athletes of his time, Owens had to find creative ways to support himself and his family.

One of the most unusual ways he earned money was by racing horses at exhibitions and public events. Spectators gathered to watch the Olympic champion compete against thoroughbreds in short sprints. Although Owens usually received a head start, the horse would often overtake him before the finish line, making the event a popular attraction.

Owens later admitted that participating in these exhibitions was humiliating, but he explained his decision with a simple truth: “People say it was degrading, but at least I had to eat.” In another memorable remark, he observed that he “couldn’t eat four gold medals.” Those words captured the harsh reality that fame alone could not overcome the economic barriers Black Americans faced in the 1930s.
