Africa’s billionaire Aliko Dangote is set to break ground on this week for a massive oil refinery in Lamu, marking the start of a project estimated at about Sh2 trillion–Sh2.2 trillion. The facility will be located within the LAPSSET corridor near Lamu Port and is expected to take roughly three years to complete.

The refinery is designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, making it one of the largest refining projects in Africa and the largest planned refinery in East Africa. Once operational, it is expected to supply refined petroleum products to Kenya and neighbouring regional markets, reducing reliance on imported refined fuel.

Beyond refining, the project is expected to anchor a wider industrial ecosystem around Lamu. Government projections indicate that the broader development could create more than 60,000 jobs, while attracting additional investments in manufacturing, logistics, energy and related industries.

The energy component is also significant. Dangote says the Lamu facility could generate up to 1,000 MW of electricity, with as much as 500 MW potentially supplied to the Kenyan government.

With its strategic location along the LAPSSET Corridor, proximity to Lamu Port and access to regional markets, the refinery is planned as more than an oil-processing facility—it is envisioned as an anchor for a broader energy and industrial hub serving Kenya and East Africa.

Held talks with the President and CEO of Dangote Industries, @AlikoDangote, and the CEO of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Samaila Zubairu, on the sidelines of UNGA in New York, USA, to discuss the financing and final preparations for commencement of the project.

The refinery will unlock new economic opportunities, strengthen regional supply chains and position East Africa as a competitive energy and industrial hub.

We are focused on turning this landmark project into reality and delivering tangible benefits for the people of the region.
