A warm welcome in Garowe marked my first visit to a Federal Member State of Somalia as @WHOSom Representative. I am grateful to Puntland’s Minister of Health, H.E. @FaroleJr, and the Ministry of Health team for their warm welcome and constructive engagement.

Today our discussions focused on strengthening health systems, building the Ministry’s capacity, and advancing shared health priorities to improve health outcomes for communities across Puntland. Working closely with Federal Member State of Somalia health authorities is essential to building resilient health systems and delivering better health outcomes for all. @MOHPuntland @WHOSom

I welcomed a @WHOSom delegation led by Dr. Humphrey @karamagih , WHO Representative in Somalia, to my office.

We discussed strengthening cooperation on disease prevention, outbreak preparedness and response, including Ebola, and improving coordination to address public health emergencies.

Today, I met with WHO Somalia colleagues for our monthly staff meeting—an important space to hear directly from our teams, address the realities of our operating environment, and keep our collective priorities aligned.

In a complex operating environment, strong teams are built on trust, clear communication, and shared responsibility. My priority is to ensure our people are informed, supported, and able to contribute fully to WHO’s work in Somalia. #whosomalia #OneWHO

At Somalia’s Joint Annual Health Sector Review, I acknowledged the Government’s commitment to joint working and development of HSSP III as the health sector’s contribution to the National Transformation Plan. Amid economic, political, and environmental challenges, including increased Ebola risk, we must sustain our focus on health security, maternal and child health, and immunization.

Somalia’s unique context calls for unique solutions, building on opportunities such as expanding community health services and continued partner support. I look forward to recommendations that help align partner support with sector priorities. @WHOSom @MoH_Somalia @DrAliHajiadam

Today, I joined the orientation of newly recruited District-level Public Health Officers in Mogadishu. These medical doctors will play an important role in preparing for and ensuring the quality of polio vaccination campaigns, while also strengthening routine immunization, disease surveillance, emergency preparedness and response, and other public health needs across the districts they serve.

Working with Somalia’s Ministry of Health, UNICEF and GPEI partners, we are bringing public health leadership closer to communities, where effective action can make a lasting difference.

Our ambition is clear: end polio and turn the gains made towards eradication into stronger public health systems that protect communities against a wider range of health threats. @WHOSom
