It's important to be aware of the various health effects of alcohol, but it's equally important to balance risk with safe enjoyment. It's an individual calculation. I wish this article emphasized that more. Check out this interview I did with @AARP

@HKalodimos There’s def a spectrum of how older adult bodies respond to alcohol, so by no means a one size fits all response here, but once you identify AUD, use is clearly associated with harms. It’s less about casting blame on the partner, but providing education and alternative therapies.
We already knew older adults are bringing their substance use disorders into later life at higher rates, and now we have data that suggests it’s contributing to decreased life expectancy in the US. Take a look at the piece we wrote for ASA for the highlights!
Life expectancy in the U.S. is on the decline and older adult deaths due to drugs and alcohol are one contributor. Drs. Lauren Kelly, @StephenSupoyo and @RLauNgMD do a great job of explaining the issue in #GenerationsNow: https://t.co/oewDyQ5x5j

We must learn to treat social determinants as active dangers to health, in the same way we treat smoking cigarettes as harmful to the body. Above all, we must learn the tools to heal the wounds they cause, say Utpal Sandesara, @WIDLML, and @addiegmd https://t.co/UkhKbZ4rz3
As our friends and colleagues brave the font lines, we must also get ready for a series of aftershocks. It's very hard to plan this far ahead while we're in survival mode. We must prepare early and strategize our response to the collateral damage of #COVID19
