• Don’t fear the circuses
10 lessons from 36 years as a Navy SEAL:
Exactly 60 years ago today, the Central Bank of Kenya Act, 1966 was passed giving Kenya full control over its own money for the first time.
Before the CBK, a colonial body called the East African Currency Board controlled monetary policy across the region. Kenya didn't even have its own currency yet.
Here's how it all unfolded:
March 1966 — CBK established by Act of Parliament
May 1966 — Dr. Leon Baranski appointed as the first Governor
September 14, 1966 — CBK formally opened its doors
1967 — The first Kenyan coins ever issued enter circulation
Today the CBK oversees over 40 commercial banks, sets the interest rate that determines the cost of every loan in Kenya, and manages the foreign exchange reserves that keep the shilling stable.
Every Kenya Shilling in your M-Pesa, wallet, or bank account exists because of what was signed into law on this day ,60 years ago.
In March 1978 Our Vice President Daniel arap Moi boarded a plane to Washington leading a muscular Kenyan delegation, they were traveling for our survival. They were received by U.S. President Jimmy Carter at the White House, where handshakes were polite but the subtext was artillery.
Far away, Ethiopia and Somalia were tearing at each other over desert territory called Ogaden. The Ogaden War was a lesson in Cold War geometry. Superpowers drew lines. African soldiers bled along them.
In those days, Nairobi had a military pact with Ethiopia. Kenyan detachments quietly assisted Addis Ababa. The future would remember that even Kenya’s former Chief of General Staff, Mahmoud Mohammed, earned decorations for exploits connected to that conflict. Kenya, outwardly calm, was already calculating.
Somalia, under the fierce nationalism of Siad Barre, possessed one of the best-equipped militaries in Africa. Soviet-supplied hardware, ambition sharpened by ideology and a habit of believing borders were suggestions.
In Washington, the message from Nairobi was if the Ogaden fire spilled south, Kenya would not wait to be surprised. President Carter responded with the careful reassurance that..
“We, the British and other Western friends,” he said, “will make arrangements to guarantee you adequate defence capabilities.”
The U.S. State Department promptly asked Congress to extend Kenya a $10 million credit facility to complete the purchase of F-5 jet fighters. sleek American machines that could turn Kenyan skies into statements. In Cold War arithmetic, $10 million was positioning.
The White House press corps reported that the Kenyan delegation “expressed opposition” to a Marxist government in Ethiopia and voiced concern that Somalia might widen the war.
Carter added another layer of reassurance. He told the Kenyans that “firm commitments” had been received from Ethiopia’s President Mengistu Haile Mariam and from the Soviet Union itself that Ethiopian forces would not cross into Somalia in ways that would drag Kenya into the inferno, it was a strange comfort because while Washington had officially embargoed arms sales to both Somalia and Ethiopia, Moscow and Havana were not feeling restrained. Cuban troops and Soviet advisers were bolstering Mengistu’s forces with tanks and MiG fighters. The Horn had become a showroom for superpower rivalry, and Africans were the demonstration models.
Kenya stood in the middle. Mogadishu did not take kindly to Nairobi’s Washington pilgrimage. Somalia lashed out, accusing Kenya of conducting a “venomous campaign” to prevent America and other nations from aiding its cause. So March 1978 closed with a quiet but unmistakable shift. Kenya had secured promises, credit, and Western backing. Somalia felt encircled. Ethiopia was being armed by the East. The United States was balancing embargoes with exceptions.
