Head of Geosciences at Virginia Tech. Tweeting whatever takes my fancy, but mostly higher education and science. Opinions not my employer's fault. He/Him.
Virginia Tech Geosciences is hiring at the tenure-track level, in the area of Energy Transition Geoscience. Please spread the word!

@seismoholique@vtgeosciences@YosemiteNPS In a general sense, just to understand the subsurface beneath the sequoias. We would like to know where they get their water, for example.
Honored to celebrate National Academy of Sciences @theNASciences inductees Bob Bodnar and Shuhai Xiao along with our other NAS member Trish Dove. @vtgeosciences @VT_Science Three members from one very proud department!
I'm delighted for the two new @theNASciences members from @vtgeosciences -- Shuhai Xiao and Bob Bodnar. Whether it's the evolution of life in the Precambrian, or the evolution of Earth's crust as seen through fluid inclusions, these two have changed geoscience. Congratulations!
If they're accurate, these poll results (from my 3000-level oceanography class) suggest that the panic among professors about ChatGPT and academic integrity may be out in front of adoption of AI tools by our students... (caveat emptor; not a scientific poll!)
Excited to lead this workshop for @EJWGStanford and @IDAStanford In light of growing concern about climate change we should use all the tools at our disposal, including theater, to raise awareness about this issue. Join us to explore the intersection of Theater and ClimateJustice
It's @vtgeosciences vs. Biology Dept. on #GivingDay - winning dept gets to throw pie in the face of opposing dept head. Fighting words from Biology below! It's neck-and-neck. Even a $5 donation gets $10 added by an alum! Help us win by noon today here: https://t.co/PzFXbBEjsM
@stress_driven@DoctorApatite I think you’re giving it a lot of credit - you’re implying that it meant static Poisson’s ratio, not dynamic, but didn’t say so. What’s fascinating about the example is that it produced a whole page of facts but still missed the point (or at minimum buried the lede by your take).
Great job by @Khorrami93 of @vtgeosciences in his lightning talk on carbon capture and earthquakes, at VT’s 7th annual Nutshell Games! Great example of a memorable stage prop. @VT_ACT
@GeomorphYuggs I like this - but of course it adds a big task to already overburdened faculty. Reading all the qualitative feedback from all of our courses will be…time-consuming.
On the annual occasion of reading faculty activity reports, I wish I could say I found solace in the wisdom of Wendell Berry. But no, I still have to summarize everyone's teaching with a single number.
