One of the central controversies in my book that is not immediately obvious is Anton Denikin versus everyone else in these memoirs. Denikin’s first two volumes of Ocherki are mostly neutral, but he grew increasingly bitter and deranged as he covered the war after 1918.

Nikolai Dukhonin was eventually buried in Kiev and given a tombstone during the German occupation. He had once been the director of the Kiev Military School, and his former subordinates and cadets paid for a real funeral. Krylenko was shot during the purges in 1938. No remains.
