Before joining #MUFC, Ten Hag in an interview said that Pep has made one mistake in his career. He underestimated the physical side of the PL and then later he fixed it by playing the likes of Fernandinho and now Rodri at 6.
Watch these 2 videos where Ten Hag is explaining his Ajax playing style. He plays a risky style where a lot of players are pushed into the attack (316 shape most times), leaving the midfield vacant.
Gullit asking him why he doesn’t want to have a Fernandinho at the base of a midfield to help the defense. Ten Hag doesn’t care. He believes in the risky style. At Ajax, his side was so much better than others that not having a great defensive shape didn’t matter. Even in the CL, his attack was often so good that it compensated for a porous midfield.
He plays the exact same style at United. Problem is PL is a different beast. You can’t get away with having a porous defense. All the teams have fantastic counter attacking threat. At United, Ten Hag’s attack isn’t that good to compensate for the lack of defense. If he had elite attackers he would still be fine. United create enough transition opportunities (advantage of his system), but we don’t take advantage of those situations most of the time. Our attackers are young (or out of form this season), and we haven’t been clinical with shots and decision making in the final third. This was one of the first things I wrote after our first game vs Wolves. Only after moving Garnacho to RW, the attack has improved.
When fans blame one particular player for the lack of defense in our team, that’s not a good look. What you see from the team is how Ten Hag wants to play. Risky style where the defense is overlooked somewhat to focus more on attack. Problem is our attackers are young and they haven’t been able to take full advantage of all those transition opportunities.
Additional remarks on what I thought ETH would do in year 2 vs what he's gone for. Biggest issue is him not reverting from latter to former at any point all season. Which means its set to continue. Personally not convinced the same thing in year 3 even with new players works.
Carlo Ancelotti wants Rodrygo to switch flanks with Vini at some point in the match against City. He has been practicing that in training all week.
