Today’s service at the #Iolaire Memorial in #Stornoway, attended by HRH The Prince Charles and First Minister @NicolaSturgeon, to commemorate the centenary of the tragedy: https://t.co/8HG3PDa9hq
A sombre New Year’s Day in Stornoway beckons, as we gather later to mark the centenary of the sinking of the Iolaire - more than 200 servicemen, returning from the horrors of WW1, drowned within sight of home. We will remember them. https://t.co/pudvU522Ks
At around 2.00am on 1st January 1919 HMY Iolaire was carrying sailors home from WW1 when she hit rocks near Stornoway harbour.
At least 201 men from Lewis & Harris died and there were only 79 survivors.
It is one of the UK’s worst maritime disasters.
