This goes considerably beyond disagreement over tariffs or any individual administration.

The deeper issue is what happens when humiliation, vindictiveness and contempt become normalized instruments of official political communication.

Allies watch these things because power is not measured only by military and economic strength. It is also measured by restraint, predictability and confidence in how that power will be used.

Canada can survive a trade dispute with the United States. What is much harder to repair is a relationship in which one population gradually stops recognizing the country it believed it knew.

That loss of trust may ultimately prove far more consequential than any tariff.
