Mothers Trapped In Hospital With Huge Unpaid Bills

We are 3 mothers who have been stuck in hospital over unpaid bills for almost two months now. Our newborns were referred to @PoplarHospke in Ngara, Starehe Constituency during the doctor‘s strike, and were admitted to their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) facilities. My baby spent 10 days in the NICU and was discharged on 28th April with a bill amounting to 1.2 million shillings. The other ladies were also discharged with bills amounting to 1.5 million and 2.5 million shillings, respectively.

The thing is, we have tried to reason with the hospital to allow us to go home after we sign agreements on repayment plans but the hospital has continually refused. They have also offered unreasonable terms that our guarantors would not agree to. We have to pay 80% of our bills for them to accept security, and sign an agreement to allow us to leave.

On my part, we had gotten a guarantor who was willing to offer his car, valued at over one million, and we had settled around 400,000 shillings of my bill. They want us to pay the remaining 700,000 shillings within two months, for them to accept the car as security and sign the agreement. We had asked for an extension of time since that period is too short but they refused and our guarantor pulled out.

For the other ladies, they refused any security until 80% of the bill was paid. We are honestly desperate as all avenues have failed us and all we seek is to have our little ones safe at home as opposed to this risky environment. One of the mothers had twins, and one died after childbirth. She could not attend the burial and has never been home since giving birth.

Additionally, the hospital keeps billing us close to 10,000 shillings every day for our continued stay. We are all jobless and unable to raise the amount. The hospital fees keep rising and we don’t know what to do. Please can you assist us get out of this place?

Could Governor Sakaja @SakajaJohnson and KIRDI officials clarify for us whether it is true that the plot is soon going to be the location of a gigantic mall? Since when did Parastatals give up, sell or lease land to private enterprise? Who is salivating over this piece of land?

And I hear that this particular construction cartel is so intimidating that news editors are shying away from this story and reporters are fearing for their lives.

We are watching. Planning must paramount. The Law must be followed. Sanity will be restored.
