@jacob_mun#MUS2011 Yes exactly! Canada is full of talent and having a quota does a fantastic job of helping those musicians against the American market.
I do think that it's important to enforce a quota for Canadian artists. Talented Canadian musicians can sometimes be overshadowed by the advertising power of American artists. Having a quota helps negate that. #MUS2011
@jacob_mun#MUS2011 I like how you said it gives Canadian artists a chance to get a foothold. Completely agree with this point. Can you think of anything else that can be done to help support Canadian artists other than having a quota?
@jacob_mun#MUS2011 Yes exactly! Especially if a cover band has their own spin on a song, it can really add to the experience. It's a good way to breathe life into an old song.
Wald's statement is partially true. I do believe that people would rather listen to the original artist of a song over a cover. However, I think the live aspect completely changes things. Bands have the potential of bringing energy to an audience that a record cannot. #MUS2011
@jacob_mun#MUS2011 I completely agree with what you said about energy. Do you think a cover band with alot of energy would be more entertaining than a live performance from the original artist?
@jacob_mun#MUS2011 Exactly! In my opinion, if an artist wants to cover another artists song on a recording they have to make a drastic change, to set it apart and really make it their own.
Schlock rock can definitely be seen as cultural theft, in the case where the covering artist doesn't make any artistic changes. However, there are definitely covers which break this. Think of the Jimi Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower compared to Bob Dylan's. #MUS2011
@jacob_mun I like the point you made about it opening up the genre to conservative listeners. How do you think this developed the rock genre long term? #MUS2011
@jacob_mun Both are very talented musicians. However, I personally prefer the sound of Sam Cooke. I find that his voice carries an extra weight to it. His voice is complimented nicely by the double bass. It delivers a very full and complete sound. #MUS2011
The way that Charles uses vocal breaks in the track is very unique. The vocal breaks do a fantastic job at mimicking the timbre of the saxophone which comes in after the second verse. It adds an almost reed-like element to his singing. #MUS2011
@jacob_mun I like how you brought up Sam Cooke in relation to Charles. What is your opinion on the two, and how they shaped the R&B/Soul genres? #MUS2011
@jacob_mun#MUS2011 I like to think optimistically that if a musician is truly talented, and if they are properly promoting their content that it will stick out among the rest, at least in their own specific music scene.
#MUS2011 Music services like Soundcloud and Bandcamp have made it easier for smaller artists to upload, and reach an audience. A lot of artists like Tom Misch and Post Malone started out by uploading tracks to Soundcloud, slowly growing an audience.
@jacob_mun#MUS2011 I completely agree with what you said about finding music being easier with new music streaming services. Stemming from that, I found that the machine learning tech revolution going on right now has had a very positive impact on finding new music!
@jacob_mun Exactly! This can even be expanded to other genres. For instance math rock is an unpopular genre and songs from the genre rarely reach top 100 status, however there are still people that really enjoy it #MUS2011
#MUS2011 A false myth portrayed in the music industry is the objectification of music being good or bad. The opinion of a song should be left to the listener, and not decided by reviews. The industry does not keep listeners passive, it helps new artists get inspiration.
@jacob_mun I've never thought about how music is constantly being pushed towards us. That's a really good point! When I worked in retail the constant music felt almost droning by the end of a shift. Do you think the variety of music played in public spaces has any impact to this? #MUS2011
