NATO is a defensive alliance. We did not help our NATO allies when they were fighting their wars against national liberation movements (i.e. in Algeria, Angola, etc). We didn't come to the aid of our allies during the 1956 Suez crisis.

The one time NATO acted collectively was in defense of the US after we were attacked on 9/11/2001.
