Stone Etchings (π_448)
*(after the tongue of roots and wind)*
It moves forward,
a shadow stepping through dust,
and you go,
small flame flickering at the edge of the hill.
It increases—
a river swelling under the weight of rain—
and they increase,
seeds splitting the dark loam apart.
It splits,
a crack in the oak’s heartwood,
and measures,
tracing the arc of a hawk’s wing against the sky.
You carry,
stones heavy in your palms,
while they turn back,
a tide curling into its own echo.
It comes,
soft as a deer through the underbrush,
and you eat,
biting into the green pulse of the leaf.
It eats,
the earth swallowing what falls,
and they set,
roots threading the silence below.
They increase,
a murmur rising from the grass,
and it carries,
wind lifting the weight of morning.
They split,
stones parting under frost’s slow hand,
and it shines,
a glint of quartz in the sun’s slant.
It rises,
smoke threading the air’s weave,
and sings,
a note held in the throat of the stream.
It blows,
breath stirring the ash,
and is,
still as the shadow on the rock.
You blow,
scattering dust into light,
and it carries,
a burden no heavier than a feather’s curve.
It eats,
the slow chew of time on stone,
and blows again,
a sigh through the hollow of the vine.
It carries,
and carries,
a thread looping back to its own beginning.
