4. A crowd of angry parents hurl insults at 6 year-old Ruby Bridges as she enters a traditionally all-white school, the first black child to do so in the United States South, 1960. Bridges is 70 years old today.
I was studying child development, & when a parent or adult hits a kid throughout their childhood, they can end up developing a dissociative disorder in adulthood. A child cannot physically escape abuse majority of the time, so they mentally go else where and detach mentally in order to protect themselves as much as they can.
So as an adult, whenever they experience pain, fear, or discomfort, especially from a loved one, instead of knowing how to work through it, or even leave the abuse, they dissociate in order to mentally escape, while being frozen in fear.
So beating your child teaches them not only is it okay for someone you love to hit you, but it also teaches them how to stay in abusive situations.
Hopes this helps for anyone who uses the line “my parents beat me and I turned out fine”.
I also learned how abused children can end up being highly imaginative and creative as adults because they’ve constantly flexed that part of their brain in order to create a new world in their mind, practiced from dissociating as a child. This isn’t really a positive either because they find it very hard to ground themselves and to be a part of society/reality. They end up being hermits, struggle with socializing and can pick up addictions much easier.
Katt Williams Said “if you wanted me to speak more highly of you then perhaps you should have treated me better…” You don’t get to narrate MY story of MY experiences with you”.
