A pattern that I've noticed studying CIA operations is that Western countries are consistently passing colonial projects between each other.
For example, a CIA asset may go in to do reconnaissance on something like locally owned mines in Brazil. Then someone tied to another Western intelligence service from Israel or France might pay an assassin to kill the head of the Union at that mine and other local assets to instigate violence. Then after the violent riots break out, everything gets shut down and the profits are lost a Canadian company may come in and offer bottom dollar to reopen the defunct mine. Every actor participating will receive some portion of the profits... But they intentionally avoid having everything carried out by one country So the chain of events leading to the takeover can be plausibly deniable.

I imagine that's what this is. We also know the UK is involved.

The conversation has taken a regrettably statistical turn. Poverty. Debt. Vanishing growth. Charts have appeared. Percentages have begun behaving badly. The Elite Economist looks faintly offended, as though numbers ought to request permission before declining.

At this delicate moment, she enters.

Marie Antoinette surveys the room with bewilderment, as though she had been promised chamber music and instead encountered Excel: “I hear there is distress among the people.”

Elite 1 (swirling his glass): “Terrible noise on social media. Endless complaining. They say food prices were unbearable these last 2 years.”

Intruder: “Real incomes are still 13% lower than a decade ago. Consumption is down. Nearly 70mn people are below the poverty line. Inequality is rising.”

Marie Antoinette inclines her head, the way one acknowledges a drizzle: “But inflation has come down, has it not? One must celebrate progress.”

Economist straightens, grateful for a cue: “Precisely. Stabilization is working. We have restored macroeconomic credibility.”

Intruder: “After 2yrs in which purchasing power was flattened. Electricity bills nearly doubled. Food prices soared. Falling from a rooftop does feel stable once you have landed.”

A small, irritated pause.

Elite 2: “Bread costs twice as much at Bru now. And loafalogy absurd. Tauba.”

Marie: “But there is quinoa.”

The room stills in admiration of her range.

Intruder: They are not choosing between quinoa and artisanal sourdough. They are choosing betwee flour and electricity.

Marie blinks, as if someone has mentioned plumbing: Then they must diversify.

Economist leans forward, almost glowing: “Exactly. Consumption patterns must adjust. The poor must upgrade themselves. Move up the value chain.”

Intruder: “Into what, exactly? Factories are idle. Farms are struggling. Exports are stagnant. The middle class is shrinking. The young have degrees and nowhere to go.”

Marie waves this aside: “But surely the market will correct? It usually does at the club.”

Economist: “It would, if the masses were not so sentimental about subsidies and representation.”

Intruder: “Representation?”

Marie: “Must they always be represented? It sounds exhausting. One cannot possibly consult everyone.”

Elite 1, emboldened by imported aristocracy, leans in: “Frankly, democracy has made them terribly expectant.”

Marie: “Expectant of what?”

Elite 1: “Accountability.”

Marie laughs lightly: “How quaint. Next they will expect competence.”

The Intruder does not smile: “Poverty is at an eleven-year high. Inequality at a near three-decade high. Investment is shrinking. Companies are leaving. Stabilization without growth is not strategy. It is survival dressed as success.”

Economist adjusts his cufflinks, offended by tone: “Performance brings legitimacy. Once growth returns, all this anxiety will dissolve.”

Intruder: “Growth for whom? The affluent are doing splendidly. The rest are absorbing shocks. Rural hardship is worsening. Urban inequality is entrenched. These are not slogans. They are sums.”

A brief silence settles. Even the air seems to wait.

Intruder: “You do recall what happened the last time royalty mistook hunger for ingratitude?”

Marie waves a manicured hand: “Oh, that. Slight miscommunication.”

The Economist nods solemnly: “Precisely. The issue is not bread. It is narrative management.”

Outside, another electricity bill arrives. Inside, the canapé tray is refreshed.

And thus the lesson is confirmed: when the numbers disappoint, adjust the story. The menu, after all, remains excellent.

Western celebrities always discover their “principles” when it’s safely about Iran, China, or some distant villain that flatters their moral vanity.
But when one of your own governments shoots an unarmed mother in her car, or storms homes like secret police, suddenly human rights become… negotiable. Convenient, isn’t it?
