UAE-Backed Rapid Support Militia Seals Off Al-Nuhud as Massacre Fears Mount in West Kordofan

The UAE-Backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) have imposed sweeping restrictions on civilian movement and commercial activity in Al-Nuhud, West Kordofan State, ordering residents to remain in their homes indefinitely, according to residents who spoke to Darfur24.

Residents said the Janjaweed Militia announced the measures through loudspeakers in markets and public places, prohibiting people from leaving their homes or engaging in commercial activities without specifying how long the restrictions would remain in place or explaining the reasons behind them.

According to the announcement, the measures include closing markets and the hospital, banning the use of Starlink satellite internet devices, restricting vehicle movement in markets and residential areas, and prohibiting motorcycles from operating inside residential neighborhoods. The Rapid Support Militia also warned residents against violating the orders, threatening “deterrent legal measures” against those who fail to comply, according to Darfur24.

Residents who spoke to the outlet said they believed the restrictions were linked to security and military arrangements inside the city. They suggested that restrictions on movement along major roads could coincide with The Janjaweed Militia troop movements or the deployment of military equipment. These assessments could not be independently verified.

The Rapid Support Militia has controlled Al-Nuhud since May 2025. The city has experienced heightened security tensions in recent months, prompting some residents to flee amid complaints of harassment and restrictions on civilian movement.

In a statement, the Dar Hamar Emergency Response Room said the closure of markets and communications networks in Al-Nuhud would further worsen already difficult living conditions for civilians and displaced families, who rely on communications services to receive financial transfers and obtain essential supplies. The group said it had withdrawn its staff and volunteers from areas of heightened tension for their safety and held the Janjaweed Militia responsible for the safety of detainees and civilians in Al-Nuhud and Abu Zabad.

Meanwhile, Dr. Amjad Farid Al-Tayeb, Adviser to the President of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, warned of the possibility of a massacre in Al-Nuhud. In a post on X, Farid said the UAE-backed Rapid Support Militia was preparing to carry out a massacre. He linked his warning to the shutdown of internet and Wi-Fi networks and the ban on Starlink devices in the city.

Farid called for urgent international action, warning that isolating Al-Nuhud from the outside world would make it more difficult to document abuses and independently verify developments on the ground.

The latest measures come amid Sudan’s continuing war and a deteriorating humanitarian situation in West Kordofan. The closure of markets and the hospital, combined with restrictions on civilian movement and communications, have raised concerns about residents’ ability to access food, medical care and contact with the outside world.
