Thanks @pha4ge@AKUGlobal, excited with my leaders and colleagues to implement data standards and reproducible Bioinformatics pipelines to achieve a timely public health response for the genomic surveillance of SC2, and where possible the identification of VOI/VOC
📢 Calling all experts! We're accepting proposals for our upcoming workshop. If you have innovative ideas and valuable insights to share, submit by 30 June and join us in creating an enriching experience! 🌟 #Workshop#CallForProposals https://t.co/40MCd9JRB1
Not everyday that bioinformaticians and experts in pathogen genomics from @AKUGlobal act as lead facilitators at a regional workshop in #Ankara. @AKUPaediatrics going places with their research training and skills @ResearchAKU
Our #London trip to meet Co-Investigators from Zambia, Burkina Faso, and Bangladesh is in the same vein of innovation: The MPIGH study has employed a novel experimental medicine platform (EMPs) focusing on interventions that may target the pregnant woman gut microbiome, emteropathogens and or enteropathy for improving birth outcomes, eg. preterm, low birthweight & fetal growth restriction. Visiting Snow’s legacy in Broadwick St., where modern epidemiology was birthed: In 1854, a deadly cholera outbreak terrorized #London. John Snow, through meticulous mapping and data analysis, traced the source to a single water pump on Broad Street. In defiance of conventional wisdom, he removed the pump handle and abruptly stopped the spread of the deadly disease. This was a reminder of the power of observation, science and unconventional thinking in combating public health challenges. @CarnabyLondon Our trip to London @GatesFoundation...🧵
It has been several years with EMP now. We have been able to establish and interpret metagenome sequencing and enteropathogen surveillance with relevance to Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Tanzanian pregnant women, with and without malnutrition and identified several signatures of health and disease along with our partner @BucciVanni lab and @AKUPaediatrics IDRL with our star team @KabirFurqan@javairia_khalid@FatimaAziz110 #NaveedIqbal @Samiah__k and many others. Harnessing a microbiome more conducive to improved maternal health holds the power to tackle the resistant problems of FGR and prematurity in these geographies.
I'm thrilled to be co-leading a seminar on Women's Leadership Development in Academic Medicine with @SyedLabGI_AI from @UVA. I appreciate all the participants who have signed up and our esteemed speakers who will share their leadership insights. Thank you all!
Researchers are using genetic sequencing to understand the gut microbiome and its influence on #maternal and #childhealth. The study is part of a larger effort by AKU to become a leader in gut microbiome research in 🇵🇰.

Our highly collaborative paper on Copper & Preterm Birth Risk 🌍out now in @AJCNutrition
🔍 Background: Our research explores the link between copper (Cu), inflammation, and preterm birth (PTB).
1/8 🤰Why It Matters: PTB, birth before 37 weeks, is a major cause of infant mortality. Understanding its causes is vital. Our focus? Copper's role.
2/8 🌐 The Study: Analyzed 10,449 pregnancies across 18 global cohorts. Used mass spectrometry to measure maternal Cu.
3/8 📊 Findings: Average Cu concentration was 1.92 μg/mL. We found a consistent pattern: Higher Cu, higher PTB risk.
4/8 📈 Key Results: Each 1 μg/mL Cu increase linked to 30% higher PTB risk and 1.64 days shorter gestation.
5/8 🇲🇼 Special Focus on Malawi: Here, high Cu correlated with inflammation markers and infections (malaria, HIV), suggesting a link to PTB risk.
6/8 🔬 Science Speak: Cu's role in inflammation might be key. It's a part of acute-phase reactants (APRs), which increase during inflammation.
7/8 🎯 Conclusions: This global study suggests maternal Cu is a potential marker for PTB risk, linked to inflammatory pathways.
8/8 🤔 Reflection: Unraveling PTB's complex causes is critical. Our study adds a piece to this puzzle, highlighting Cu's potential impact.
