@Modster99 Section 32 of USMCA, the current free trade agreement with the US, has precisely such a term. If Canada makes a free trade agree with another country, the US has can review it and should the US not approve, then the US can give 6 months notice to kick Canada out of USMCA.
@JeanPFournier Hard to blame Lutnick for anything when Carney refuses to release exact details as to what the alleged changes that the US was demanding. The US version that Canada simply walked away from a trade deal that already had been accepted by Canada is far more plausible.
@davidbexte 70% of Canadian exports went to the US last year worth 569 billion $ Canadian. There are no other markets that can take this volume of trade.
@PremierScottMoe 59% of Saskatchewan’s exports are to the US worth $26.7 billion. The US is Saskatchewan’s largest trading partner.Carney shutting down the trade negotiations with the US is a huge blow to its economy. USMCA already prevents 🇨🇦 trading with other countries without US approval.
@MarcNixon24 Manitoba receives approximately $3,100–$3,350 per capita in federal equalization payments, or about 18% of its annual budget. Easy for Wab to trash the US, where 70% of Manitoba’s exports go to, when someone else is paying to keep your province running.
@dubsndoo Less than 1% of total U.S. electricity supply comes from Canadian imports. The US can easily replace Canadian oil & gas imports from its own domestic producers.
@midnightriderV2 Only one free trade agreement has been signed since Carney took office the Canada–Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Another Canada–United Arab Emirates Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is not yet signed. All the rest are MOUs only.
@aaaPavlov777 90% of Canadian hard liquor exports are to the US, mostly whiskey, and mostly distilled in Ontario. Devastating to Ontario distilleries should Trump proceed with 50% tariffs. Time to cool the rhetoric, Mr. Ford!
@WorkingCdns@cuthill100 Article 32.10 (Non Market Economies) of the current free trade USMCA already gives the US the right to terminate Canada as a party should Canada enter into a free trade agreement with any 3rd party which, after review, the US does not approve of. Carney is gaslighting us.
@daveaurkov Carney’s ‘plan’ is to print more money, causing more inflation ,a further devaluation of the 🇨🇦 dollar, and eventually to make us all dependent upon the federal government with a Universal Basic Income, with Carney in charge, his new ‘World Order’. The Cloward - Piven Strategy.
@MarcNixon24 77% of Ontario’s exports go to the US - roughly 195 billion dollars Canadian, more than 8 times larger than the next destination, the UK. The US takes 90% of Canada’s hard liquor sales, most of which is made in Ontario. Ontario can not afford a trade war with the US.
@ztisdale The dairy farmers have infiltrated both the Liberals and the Conservatives such that no candidate for party leader for either will ever be selected without the dairy cartel’s approval.
