David Warsinger

Purdue Professor, whose lab focuses on thermodynamics and nanoengineering for water and membrane technologies.

It's nice to see our ranking jump, but it may just be due to a methodology change: the ME ranking is now based on votes from peers that think a school is in the top 15. I'm more proud of the Engineering school ranking (4th), which considers real metrics: https://t.co/50MECNbezJ

[Purdue Mechanical Engineering @PurdueME]

🏆HIGHEST RANK EVER! @PurdueME is the #4 mechanical engineering undergraduate program in the country, its highest placement in the 40-year history of @usnews rankings: https://t.co/Q8GHZ3Eesz

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

Prof. Guihua Yu @UT_YuGroup and I were quoted news @cenmag about Atmospheric Water Harvesting #sorbents that release water when squeezed like Loofahs, thus using less energy and fewer steps than thermally-regenerated sorbents https://t.co/pTX1aBiChA https://t.co/2OE0swbSNr

We have a new group photo for the 2026 Warsinger Lab! See our website for the full list of members: https://t.co/ICF5msTj9T
I wonder if any other Purdue labs have as many undergrads as we do...

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

By directly coupling a hydraulic #wind_turbine with #reverse_osmosis, we can reduce capital costs, reduce energy losses, and take advantage of higher durability to operate in higher winds, resulting in better technoeconomics than uncoupled RO and wind. https://t.co/NRg6SRXin4

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

The dynamic nature of batch #reverse_osmosis processes create much more need for optimization. We introduce #trajectory_optimization to temporally multi-staged batch reverse osmosis, to determine intermediate salinities and optimize energy and water flux. https://t.co/yv9mAd0XOd

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

We introduce "temporally-multistaged" batch counterflow #reverse_osmosis, which drastically reduces capital costs of ultra-high salinity #reverse osmosis by using the same hardware for each stage, with holding tanks of varied salinity. https://t.co/QLIRlqJwgL

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

We coauthored a study on #supercritical water oxidation, which can separate salts, break down hydrocarbons, and even produce energy from them. The technique may be more cost effective than conventional alternatives for many highly saline produced waters. https://t.co/20cdsE0TYW

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

We are glad to have our team, Renaissance Water, led by Harmony Desalting, qualified for the XPrize for our Batch RO technology!

[XPRIZE @xprize]

We're thrilled to announce the #XPRIZEWaterScarcity Qualified Teams! 💧These teams have passed a rigorous judging process, demonstrating strong potential to develop scalable seawater desalination solutions. Learn about the teams here. https://t.co/lGQkNIsblT

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

Two of our lab members transitioned to faculty roles this Fall. PhD Student Sultan Alnajdi is starting at Kuwait University (The top ranked program in the country) and visiting scholar Manvi Yadav has started as a lecturer at Purdue Fort Wayne.

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

Our team published a paper looking at whether pressure retarded osmosis could make #seawater Batch #Reverse_Osmosis more efficient, finding it could do so and achieve better (but still challenging) costs than conventional PRO https://t.co/r2JcHuQI6n

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

Purdue announces patents awarded to faculty each month, and we had 3 awarded in September! The most of any Purdue faculty (one other had 2). https://t.co/L7SLBAUoEf

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

I really enjoyed this conference in Korea! My colleagues are doing some really great science! Also, it was great meeting up with others who trained at @TheElimelechLab (bottom right image)

💧Congratulations to David Warsinger (@WarsingerLab) receiving the 2025 @IWAHQ Rising Star Award, recognizing early-career researchers in the field of membrane-based water treatment. David will be speaking about his work at Purdue on Wed, Oct 8: https://t.co/gBU4a483XV

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

For advanced oxidation of photocatalytic nanoparticles, we showed that material composites (e.g. Au/TiO2) improve performance more by reducing electron-hole recombination, rather than surface plasmon resonance or particle self-electrophoresis. https://t.co/bJrum6V9Cq

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

Our team developed the first membrane #distillation #desalination system that uses slippery liquid infused surfaces (#SLIPS)! We saw modest improvements in #heat_transfer coefficients, and large efficiency gains from decreased droplet departure diameter. https://t.co/3I1fK8Z2Gs

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

One of our Lab’s PhD student, Md Ashiqur Rahman, is one of the winners of the 2025 SURF Lab Mentor Award—for the second summer in a row! This summer, he mentored two undergraduate researchers on membrane fabrication for air dehumidification. #SURF2025 #PurdueEngineering

Congratulations to #ISF faculty affiliates David Warsinger and Jose Garcia Bravo on receiving funding from the Office of Naval Research! @PurdueME @TechPurdue

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

It's been an eventful couple of months! We had a baby, and I got tenure and a few awards; Best Early Career Teacher in Purdue Engineering, ACS PMSE Early Investigator, Journal of Membrane Science's Early Career Editorial Board, and the Showalter Foundation Early Career Grant!

[David Warsinger @WarsingerLab]

I was honored to receive the Faculty Excellence Award for Early Career Teaching, which Purdue Engineering gives to one untenured prof. each year, along with a $4k prize! They even played a nice video from my students and colleagues at the awards ceremony! https://t.co/V8mW3avUOX
