Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, if they are out in the daytime this is usually a sign something is wrong. CALL A RESCUE ASAP for advice - even if they look quite bright as they may not be showing just how unwell they are.

@CUHedgehogs @DuncanWestbury @BramblesPawLtd @SpikesFood Yes, cut and paste 'advice' gets spread without underlying knowledge. No, it doesn't really matter, it doesn't have to be high as long as it's the first ingredient, so it's the source of protein. Spike's dry isn't harmful, just poor quality. It's their semi-moist that has sugar.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so one out in the day means they need help (exception being a female 🦔 moving with purpose/carrying nesting materials).

Please do not feed them peanuts or raisins.

Instead leave out cat food, @BramblesPawLtd, or @SpikesFood + bowls of fresh water.

Litter can sadly be a big problem for hedgehogs 🚮 One such offender is elastic bands which can wrap around hedgehogs' legs, cut off circulation causing serious harm or death ❌🦔

The hedgehogs being seen out now have risen from hibernation too early and need feeding.
Yes, hedgehogs will naturally forage, but there is NOT ENOUGH natural food around now for them to survive. Hedgehogs eat caterpillars and beetles, NOT slugs/snails.
Please help them.

Hedgehogs don't have a fight-or-flight response so when terrified they don't struggle, bite or run. But they feel fear just the same.
Causing wildlife stress by touching them can kill, or cause an abortion. So please never handle a hog unless taking a casualty to a rescue.

A life sentence of suffering stress in captivity. Do you live in europe and have a garden? If so please provide food and water, you may have a lovely surprise.

Not all hedgehog food for sale is suitable, even if it's marketed for them. Always check what's in food. Had some brought to the rescue as a “Wild Hedgehog Food” which is full of raisins and dry banana slices and mealworms. Dry cat food is best with meat as the first ingredient.

Please say no to garden poisons such as pesticides and weedkillers, to help keep them out of the food chain. Hedgehogs, for example, can hoover up over 100 invertebrates every night!

Hedgehogs hibernate for the winter, when temperatures get too cold. This means that hedgehogs will be fairly inactive over winter. It is possible that hedgehogs will wake up and look for a bite to eat before returning to their sleep.

@RSPCANottingham @RSPCA_Frontline @RSPCA_official It doesn’t look visibly injured and it’s walking around ok but it’s making no attempt to fly or even move it’s wings. It’s wings look slightly frozen so the ranger said it’ll most likely be near the building for warmth
