The Water Research Foundation (WRF) 💧

Advancing the science of water to improve the quality of life.

[American Water @amwater]

Research is central to American Water's work to provide safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater for customers, and partnerships with organizations like @WaterResearch (WRF) are just one way we continue to support industry advancements. For the past year, Lead Scientist of Research and Development at American Water Dr. Sunayna Dasgupta has served on one of WRF’s many Project Advisory Committees, working alongside peers to advice the science of drinking water.

PFAS destruction may soon get a major energy-saving upgrade — using the same technology that heats your lunch.

Researchers supported by @WaterResearch have discovered that microwaves can regenerate activated carbon and destroy PFAS at a fraction of the energy needed for incineration.

The team is now exploring how large-scale microwave systems could be installed directly at drinking water facilities, turning an everyday technology into a powerful tool for clean water innovation, says Peter Grevatt.

Lauren Weinrich, Director of Research and Development at American Water, recently joined the @WaterResearch's Water Utility Research Community (WURC)SHOP at @SNWA_H2O, alongside other water utilities' representatives from across the U.S. Participants gathered to network and discuss the importance of developing and expanding utility research programs, reinforcing their vital role in helping to ensure that water and wastewater treatment processes meet or exceed federal and local standards.

The biggest source of PFAS chemicals entering wastewater treatment plants isn’t industry — it’s what’s coming from our homes and offices.

Peter Grevatt of @WaterResearch explains that when you combine concentration and volume, domestic wastewater accounts for the greatest overall PFAS mass reaching treatment facilities. That is because of the presence of the chemicals in consumer products and household goods.

Last year, American Water was awarded a new grant from @WaterResearch, focusing on the role of spectral imaging as an Early Warning System for algal blooms in water sources.

During one of these blooms, operational and public health issues can arise for both water service providers and communities. Spectral imaging aims to provide better observations for preparation and planning purposes.

This research project is scheduled to conclude in 2026. An update was published recently.
