The most popular reading material in class this term has been this collection of song lyrics. With volitional reading in decline, we need to start paying attention to what children are telling us about their reading preferences and valuing the texts they're already drawn to.
This is a golden age of children's literature. There are books being published today that will shape the minds of generations; life-changing books whose readers will change the world. There really is a book for EVERYONE now - if we can just help every reader find those books!
Hello - I wrote a new blog about the teaching of whole class reading, which I haven't in a while. It's over 9000 words so quite a read, but I hope the comprehensive nature of it comes across as helpful, rather than patronising. Anyway - hope it's useful!

@theLucyStrange always writes great gothic stories so I love that she’s abridged Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It’s a murderous, exciting, grief-stricken exploration of science, love and loss which readers will love. Out now for 8+. Thanks @WalkerBooksUK

If you're looking for a perfect Halloween class book for Y5/6 that can be read in a week, you won't do better than The Last Day of October by @Hickesy. Creepy and atmospheric, with a fantastic cliffhanger at the end of each chapter.
