Farcaster Is Changing Direction. Is SocialFi Still the Point? 🤔

Many Farcaster users may have voted without fully understanding the bigger picture.

Farcaster grew around an open social protocol, crypto-native communities, on-chain identity, Mini Apps and the promise of SocialFi.

Now, with Network School taking over, the vision appears to be shifting towards digital societies built around shared rules, stronger moderation and communities that could eventually extend into the physical world.

This is more than a change in ownership. It could be a change in what Farcaster is ultimately trying to achieve.

SocialFi isn’t necessarily dead. But it may no longer be the main objective.
The distinction matters:

1. The app: Network School can define the rules and experience of the official Farcaster client.

2. The protocol: An open protocol can still support independent clients, developers and alternative visions.

3. The ecosystem: Mini Apps, tokens and projects like Clanker have their own futures. Neither their disappearance nor business as usual should be assumed.

The bigger strategic question is whether Farcaster is moving from a SocialFi-first model to a community-first model — where crypto becomes infrastructure for digital societies rather than the main attraction.

Could this be a bridge to Web2? Potentially. A more accessible, well-moderated social experience could appeal to people who have never cared about crypto.

But mainstream adoption alone doesn't explain the entire shift. Network School also has a broader ambition: building digital communities that may eventually become real-world communities.

The challenge is to pursue that vision without undermining the openness, permissionless experimentation and developer freedom that attracted so many people to Farcaster.

And let's not confuse accepting new app rules with endorsing an entire ideology. An NFT recording your vote is not equity or a promise of an airdrop.

So, is Farcaster still SocialFi?

Technically, it can be. Strategically, the emphasis may be changing.

The real question is whether SocialFi remains at the heart of the product — or becomes just one feature of a much bigger vision.
