Amidst challenges, internally displaced persons (#IDPs) have begun returning to their villages in Tselemti district, North Western Zone of Tigray. Tadele Mengistu, overseeing the returnees' transportation, reported that 1,456 IDPs successfully returned to Mai Aini, Mai Anbesa, Madhanealem, and Wuhedat kebeles on 29 June, 2024.

Despite this progress, concerns about safety, basic necessities, and rebuilding linger among the estimated 80,000 IDPs from the region. The returnees received one-month rations and security assurances from the Tigray interim administration and NGOs upon arrival, with the Ethiopian National Defense Force (#ENDF) now maintaining control.

While welcomed warmly, returnees remain cautiously optimistic amidst fears of armed group presence. In an interview with Addis Standard, a returnee shared mixed emotions of happiness and apprehension, reflecting broader anxieties about security and support. Tadele stressed the urgent need for comprehensive government and humanitarian efforts to ensure safe returns and effective reintegration, vital for lasting peace in Tigray.
