Why are many sports journalists conspicuously silent about the dark side of betting, especially the most outspoken gambler in sports media, Bill Simmons?

I really loved going on the r/BillSimmons Podcast to talk about it. It's a whole chapter of my book, EVERYBODY LOSES, and it gets more relevant with every day.

You'd think Simmons, having been betting and writing/talking about betting for decades, would share a ton of insight on his pod about Brendan Sorsby, Malik Beasley, Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, Emmanuel Clase, Jontay Porter, the dozens of NCAA basketball players indicted for point shaving, Kayshon Boutte (of the Patriots, no less!), and so many other huge gambling-related news events.

Instead, he ignores them or hems and haws, bumbling his way through industry talking points.

In fact, I asked RBS: In the hundreds of hours of BS pods since legal betting took off, can you think of a single sentence he's said that would have upset FanDuel?

That's why the torrent of sportsbook (and now prediction market) dollars flooding sports media is so damaging. Effectively buying the silence of prominent, respected voices in sports is a huge problem.

On that note, I told RBS why I devoted pages to Simmons and not, say, Dave Portnoy. For one, I listen to the BS pod. But it's also because I genuinely believe Simmons could do better. He's not a clown; he takes himself seriously and wants to be taken seriously. His whole reputation is founded on being a defiant truth-teller.

Yet when it comes to the betting boom, one of the most consequential stories in sports over the past several years, he's betraying that commitment.
