The British named the mountain after George Everest (Sikdar’s boss), even though Everest himself had never seen the peak.

2. Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis (The Saviour of 60 Million): During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, cholera was killing 1000s in refugee camps. Dr. Mahalanabis, working with almost zero resources, pioneered Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT), the simple salt-sugar-water solution.

3. Narendra Karmarkar (The Algorithm King): If you use a GPS/an airline booking system today, you are using the brain of this Bengali mathematician. In 1984, while at Bell Labs, he invented the Karmarkar’s Algorithm. Before him, solving linear programming problems (like finding the most efficient route for 1000 planes) took computers weeks. His "Interior Point Method" allowed computers to solve these in mins.

4. Dr. Upendranath Brahmachari (The Vanquisher of Black Fever): In the early 1900s, Kala-azar (Black Fever) was a death sentence with a 90% mortality rate in India. In a tiny, poorly equipped room at Campbell Medical School (now NRS Medical College), he synthesized Urea Stibamine in 1922. He refused to patent it so that the poor could afford it. Within yrs, the mortality rate dropped from 90% to under 10%.

5. Sarbajit Rakshit (The Patent Machine): As of 2026, Sarbajit Rakshit (an IBM engineer from Kolkata) is 1 of the world's most prolific inventors. He holds over 1100+ US patents, ranking him 21st in the world for the most patents held by an individual...higher than many tech legends.
