On September 11, 2001, Lieutenant Colonel Brian Birdwell was working on the second floor of the Pentagon's E-Ring (the outermost ring) when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building. He was just 15 to 20 yards away from the exact point where the nose of the plane penetrated the structure, making him one of the closest people to the impact to survive.

Moments before the crash, Birdwell had stepped out of the restroom. When the aircraft hit at 9:37 a.m., he heard a sound louder than anything he had ever experienced. The explosion tossed him "like a rag doll" down the corridor and instantly set him ablaze. The intense heat and fuel vapor melted his polyester military uniform directly onto his skin. Trapped in pitch-black, toxic smoke, and unable to breathe due to searing air and jet fuel vapor, Birdwell collapsed. Believing he was about to die, he prayed, said a silent goodbye to his family, and "accepted his death". Suddenly, the Pentagon’s ceiling sprinkler system activated right above him, extinguishing the flames on his body. This gave him just enough strength to crawl and find help.

A group of colleagues found him in the smoke, pulling him to safety. Because the burns were so extensive across his body, a medical team at a makeshift triage station inside the Pentagon had to administer an IV and morphine directly through his feet, which were the only parts of his body left unburned. Birdwell suffered burns over 60% of his body, with nearly half of them being third-degree. His most critical injury was an intensive internal inhalation injury. The scorching air and toxic fumes had severely seared his lungs, requiring him to be placed on a respirator for several weeks.

Doctors initially gave Birdwell less than a 1% chance of survival, prompting him to say what he thought were his final goodbyes to his 12-year-old son from his hospital bed. Against all odds, he survived. He spent 92 days at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center Burn Unit and underwent 39 reconstructive surgeries over four years of agonizing rehabilitation to regain his mobility. He was awarded the Purple Heart for the wounds he received that day.”

Almost 25 years later, I met Brian at the Pentagon, not far from where he cheated death. That’s him, all the way on to my right, barely in the frame. The guy in the green tie with a big smile. We met in The Hall of Heroes, where I had just accepted a check for The mikeroweWORKS Foundation, on behalf of everyone at Build Freedom - including The Honorable Brian Birdwell.

“My name is Brian Birdwell,” he said. “And I just wanted to say hello and thank you for all those dirty jobs! And for what you’re doing with your foundation. I think it’s terrific!”

“Thanks,” I said. “I appreciate your support and I promise to spend the money wisely. Oh, and thank you for your service.”

It was a rather assumptive thing to say, since I didn’t know at the time that Brian Birdwell had been a Lt. Colonel in the Army, much less what he’d endured 25 years ago. But there was something about his bearing. His posture. The flag on the lapel. The scars on his hands. He seemed like a man who understood sacrifice.
“This is the greatest country in the world,” he said, “and it’s my privilege to serve it. Now keep on doing what you do, Mr. Rowe!"

There were many other hands to shake that day, and lots of other people to meet, including the fine Americans standing with Brian, all of whom have stories worth sharing. But on this day, I’ll focus on Brian Birdwell. Partly because I really appreciate what Build Freedom is doing for our country, and partly because I really am grateful for the service and the sacrifice he made for you and me. But mostly, because 25 years after those murderous swine tried their best to kill him, Brian Birdwell is still standing. Still smiling. Still serving the country he loves.

I realized all of this several minutes ago, after I boarded a United flight from LAX to San Francisco. As we waited on the tarmac, I saw a link in my newsfeed to the article I quoted above, and learned about the man who somehow survived the attack on the Pentagon 25 years ago. A man I last saw in The Hall of Heroes, wearing a green tie and a big smile. A man called Brian Birdwell, who didn’t bother to tell me about himself the day we met. Hopefully, he won’t mind too much if I tell you about him today, before wising all of you safe travels, in friendly skies.

These juror interviews are extraordinary. They are admitting openly that they disregarded the law entirely for the sake of letting Clancy off the hook. There’s no other way to read it.

One juror says she originally wanted to vote guilty but changed her mind so that “Lindsay could get the help she needs.” That is a clear violation of the law. They were supposed to make a determination solely about guilt or innocence. They were not there to make sure anyone “gets help.”

Another juror says she voted not guilty because the prosecution never produced “character witnesses” proving Clancy was a “bad mother.” The problem is that A) killing your children IS definitive evidence that you’re a bad mother, and B) the prosecution would not have been allowed to call those kinds of witnesses. A witness solely testifying that Clancy was a bad mother would have been purely prejudicial. So this juror acquitted because the prosecution failed to provide evidence that they weren’t allowed to provide and which would have been irrelevant anyway. Extraordinary. This same juror even admitted that it was a “fact” that Clancy “viciously killed her children.” The word vicious literally means “done maliciously and with intent.” So if that’s a fact then they were obligated to vote guilty. But they didn’t.

Meanwhile another juror swooned over the defense attorney’s “entertaining” demeanor. And another one said that all of the facts of the case — “everything,” her words — “proved” that Clancy “loved her children.” Apparently strangling your children to death, in this juror’s mind, does not at all call your love for them into question.

Just a collection of the most morally obtuse idiots ever assembled. Amazing.

OK. So I'm getting lots of pushback about my concerns regarding J.D. Vance's proposal to pay working moms to stay home. In general, I would love for every mom to be home. Here are my issues with this program:

1) Does this continue until the kid turns 18? What if the mom wants to stay home and homeschool? It would need to continue that long, right?

2) Is this $9K per child? You saw what LBJ's idea did... encouraged many women esp. in low income communities to have babies for the sole intent of increasing their welfare check. I want more babies, too, but I want us to foster makers not takers.

3) I understand that it's not a new tax. But the original program was created to fund childcare facilities. You saw what happened... runaway fraud in the learing centers! Do you think that this will decrease fraud? People are creative, and they will figure out a way to game the system. No question. If the government wants to help the economy and increase wealth, get rid of the tax period and refund it to the people, all people.

4) Is this a function of government? Not in my opinion. It is socialism, straight up. So in general I oppose programs that redistribute wealth, but I do see this as a way to help families. I just don't see it as the best way.

5) If they enact it, it needs to encourage the family unit... mom, dad, kids. I don't see it doing that. Divorce and the death of one parent are inevitable. It is not an incentive to grow familes.

6) Wasn't the child tax credit on our federal income tax supposed to be the answer to the cost of raising kids? That has morphed into a given, no longer considered a benefit. And so it will be with any amount of money that is given to the people from the taxpayers. It will merely prolong the need to collect more taxes, and it will grow as the population grows.

That's it. If I think of anything else, I'll post below. And mind you, I have great empathy and admiration for every woman who chooses to stay at home and raise children. I won't freak out if this is passed, but my preference would be to stop the wealth redistribution and refund the tax to everyone.

🚨 MICHIGAN — I am absolutely infuriated by this.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh has DENIED Americans for Citizen Voting–Michigan’s emergency request to get the citizens-only voting amendment onto the November ballot.

No written opinion. No explanation. Just DENIED.

Let me make sure I understand this correctly.

More than 700,000 Michigan citizens signed petitions asking for the opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment making it clear that only U.S. citizens can vote in Michigan elections.

The State Board of Canvassers blocked it.

Americans for Citizen Voting fought back, ultimately taking the case all the way to the United States Supreme Court.

Justice Kavanaugh then ordered Michigan to respond on an expedited timeline — which certainly made it look like the Court understood the urgency of what was happening.

Michigan responded. ACVM replied.

And then?

Denied. Without explanation.

So forgive me for asking the obvious question:

Why demand an expedited response from the State if you're going to deny emergency relief without even explaining the legal reasoning?

Maybe there is a legal rationale. But Kavanaugh didn't provide one in the order, so none of us should pretend we know what it is.

And THAT is precisely what is so infuriating.

This isn't some theoretical law-school exercise. There is a ballot deadline staring Michigan voters in the face.

We're talking about 700,000+ petition signatures and citizens attempting to exercise a right Michigan's own Constitution gives them: the initiative process.

If citizens follow the law, collect hundreds of thousands of signatures, challenge the government's decision through the courts and STILL cannot even get the question before voters, at some point we have to ask:

What exactly are these laws and constitutional rights worth if nobody will enforce them when it matters?

And here's the kicker:

Kavanaugh's denial does NOT say those sworn voter affidavits were fraudulent.

It does NOT say those citizens didn't sign the petitions.

It does NOT contain a ruling that the Board was correct on the merits.

It simply denies the emergency injunction.

Apparently 700,000+ Michiganders can sign a petition asking to VOTE on whether only citizens should vote…

…and somehow Michigan voters may never get to vote on it.

You honestly couldn't write the irony better if you tried.

I believe in the rule of law. I believe in our Constitution. And I believe courts exist in part to protect citizens when government institutions overstep their authority.

But the rule of law only means something if citizens can actually rely on it when the clock is running out.

The @USSupremeCourt let us down big time today.

Michigan voters deserved an answer. At the VERY least, they deserved an explanation.

Let me say it plainly.

People who kill people are mentally ill and they should all be held accountable.

Mental illness explains pain.
It does not erase three dead kids.
It does not turn strangulation into a paperwork error.

It does not hand you a free pass because the defense found a doctor.

Lindsay Clancy’s jury is on day six and counting. Fan mail is pouring in. Half the country is being trained to treat murder like a diagnosis.

You can be sick and still be guilty.
You can need help and still belong in a prison cell.
Civilization’s lowest bar is simple: you don’t get to kill your children and walk because a lawyer said the word insanity.
