On a sunny Saturday in the summer of 2009, I visited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth home and memorial in Atlanta. Immersed in his legacy, I stood in his home office, where he spent countless nights reflecting and organizing. His commitment to nonviolence, inspired by Gandhi’s Satyagraha—truth through nonviolent resistance—moved me deeply. Listening to audio clips, watching videos of Black people’s suffering, and reading Letter from Birmingham Jail opened my eyes forever.
I also wrestled with hard truths about Christianity—the faith I was raised in—and how it has been weaponized to justify violence and dehumanization. My heart broke, but I learned to embrace spirituality over blind adherence, seeking the fruits of the spirit: love, justice, kindness, and empathy. Character is not in what we profess but in how we live and lead.
In a world fractured by race, inequality, wars, and a growing climate crisis, Dr. King’s values are more urgent than ever. His lessons of justice, courage, and empathy must guide current and future generations to rebuild the bonds of humanity. For the last decade in Uganda 🇺🇬, I’ve carried his ideals—teaching moral leadership, training 700+ leaders, and inspiring changemakers to lead with integrity.
I believe the failures of our generation will become the triumphs of the next. “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Let’s commit to bending it. Happy MLK Jr. Day!
I'm heartbroken for the friends and families who have lost their homes, schools, and communities to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Sending strength and hope that the fires are contained soon so the rebuilding can begin.
Have loved this visit to @Teach4Nigeria. It was such an honor to visit Olayinka Adeosun and the students in his space program! He was one of three TFN fellows among Lagos’ 6 Teachers of the Year in 2024.
Disasters may be inevitable, but resilience is built. 🌟
