The private equity takeover of local veterinary clinics is one of the most predatory scams happening in America right now.
Last month, our 3-year-old rescue dog threw up twice and seemed a little lethargic. Just acting off. We got nervous and rushed him to the local 24-hour emergency animal hospital.
Before a vet had even stepped into the room, the receptionist slid an iPad across the desk:
"Emergency exam intake fee is $385 non-refundable just for the doctor to evaluate him."
Fine. You pay it because you love your dog.
The vet walks in, checks his gums for twenty seconds, feels his stomach, and walks back out. Five minutes later, she returns with a printed estimate:
Full blood panel: $650.
Abdominal ultrasound: $900.
Overnight hospitalization with IV: $1,400.
Exploratory sedation: $800.
Total estimated cost: $3,750.
I asked the vet: "He ate a weird piece of grass earlier. Can we just start with an anti-nausea injection and monitor him for a couple of hours?"
The vet looked me dead in the eyes with a straight face and said:
"You can do that. But if he has a complete gastrointestinal blockage, he could go septic and pass away by sunrise."
Pure emotional manipulation.
They know your pet is family, so they hold your empathy hostage to hit corporate revenue quotas.
We declined the package, paid the exam fee, and took him home. Fed him white rice and boiled chicken. Two hours later, he drank a bowl of water, took a long nap, and was running circles around the yard by 8:00 AM the next morning.
Massive private corporations bought out almost every neighborhood mom-and-pop vet clinic, turned them into profit mills, and weaponized our love for animals into maximum billing.
Has modern veterinary medicine become an emotional shakedown, or are people just ungrateful for specialized care?
An Uber driver totally scammed me:
→ 2:53AM picks me up from hotel (drives 19mins)
→ 3:12AM drops me at the airport (then stays put and leaves the trip running for another 1hr 11mins)
→ 4:25AM ends the trip
Uber has no classification for this type of fraud.
It was early, I had barely slept the night before and was bleary eyed. But the middle-of-the-night prices in Mexico City were $10 for Uber X or $25 for Black SUV. I splurged.
The guy showed up in a huge black Suburban with Mexican flags proudly waving from the front of the vehicle.
There was no traffic and the trip was 19mins.
We pulled up to Terminal 1, I hopped out and he handed me my bag. I asked if I could take a photo of his flags and with his consent, I did. That photo was time stamped 3:12am.
I went through security, bought some water, found a seat in surprisingly packed terminal and read for an hour. As I boarded the plane ~4:30, I got a notification that my Uber was $66 and was confused but didn't have the time or capacity to figure it out.
When I got home, I looked into what could possibly have happened. Yes the estimate had been $24.56. No, there were no extra fees. And that's when I saw that the driver ran the trip for 1hr 31mins (instead of the 19mins it actually took).
No problem, I went right into Uber support. But that's when I realized there actually was a problem: My issue didn't fit neatly into any of Uber's support queues. It wasn't a route issue, it wasn't an incorrect origination or destination, it wasn't a no-show.
The driver just literally sat in place for an extra 1hr 11mins, running the trip (likely until another customer requested a ride). And this was a scam that Uber didn't classify as a scam.
I have photographic evidence that I was outside the vehicle at 3:12pm and credit card purchases from inside the airport while the driver was running the trip.
But Uber support doesn't consider this fraud and their AI support chat is totally useless.
If you're still reading and...
1. You work at Uber, fix the loophole and please help.
2. You take Uber, make sure your driver ends the trip when you arrive.
3. You take Ubers in Mexico City, avoid my schmuck of a driver.
I would like to think the driver didn't intentionally run the meter for an additional 1hr 11mins, but I am starting to lose faith in my initial optimism. I haven't yet given the driver a 1 star rating, but if Uber won't acknowledge this, I don't have much choice. This isn't about the $40. It's about the loophole, the violation, and the lack of Uber support to correct the issue and penalize the driver.

@TJTheWheelDeal@FreedomGoat_ That’s what I’m doing with ORCL. Painful lessons, indeed. Not the right stock to be learning from. I was in 220C CC when it zoomed to 250. Couldn’t get out of CC without a loss so held on and then the stock crashed. Never thought -200.% was possible!!
What do you all think of this $243 Nonstop to Tokyo. Fare has bag fees, but at this price, I think those are pretty well offset.
$243 one-way
$556-$670 round-trip

@darkminer What I’ve done is buy back the CSP at 50% and close the trade, which leaves capital available to try again. I use it for income, for the time being.

BREAKING: Anthropic is planning to launch its IPO in November despite AI safety concerns, per WSJ.
The company is expected to IPO at a $2 trillion valuation and raise up to $100 billion in the offering.
Anthropic is expected to reach more than $110 billion in annualized revenue by year-end.
I know you can drive it in about 4-hours or so, but,
$14 nonstop, one-way. Los Angeles to Las Vegas is a pretty good deal.
You can avoid bag fees by using their card perk, similar to United's fares.
