First Day of Pads at #Bears Camp!
Noteables:
1. Gervon Dexter is on the cusp of becoming the difference-making player that they need him to be. He’s not there yet, but it’s clear that he has all the tools to become that guy.
• When he plays with a low pad
level, he’s immovable and
dominant. And he cannot be
blocked 1-on-1. He does not play
with great pad level on every snap
though. He must become more
consistent with that.
• You can see his improved
conditioning. By now, I’m sure
you know he did the conditioning
test with the D-Ends. He’s leaner
and quicker than last year. The
Coaches are testing the starting
DLine’s endurance, at times going
8-10 plays with no substitutions.
Gervon was fine for most of the
practice, but he was gassed and
gave minimal effort during the last
Team period. He’s gonna have to
work to be as strong in the 4th Qtr
as he will be in the 1st Qtr.
• The only time the OLine was able
to move Gervon was when they
double teamed him. He must
improve his recognition of when
that may be coming, so he can
sink his hips and anchor. He
needs to be able to hold up at the
point of attack versus those
double teams, even though he
may not get penetration nor make
the tackle.
2. Tory Taylor does it again!
• In addition to the bombs he was
hitting during Special Teams
periods, Tory executed a perfect
punt during a Team period,
bouncing the ball out of bounds
at the 1yd line. STC Coach
Hightower said of the kick,
“Offenses WILL NOT be able to
drive 99 yards on Coach Flus and
Coach Washington’s Defense.”
3. Artistic drive by Caleb and the Offense during the last Team period of the day.
• In a 2 Minute Drill, Caleb started
fast with great timing and
accuracy on an out route to Rome
Odunze.
• He then threw an absolute laser
over the middle to Keenan Allen.
• Caleb did overthrow Odunze on a
would-be touchdown. Rome was
streaking down the right side, after
miscommunication between
Tyrique Stevenson and Jaquan
Brisker led to the blown coverage.
• Caleb bounced back and finished
the drive by maneuvering to his
right before lofting a perfectly
placed ball to Tyler Scott for a
touchdown.
