A lesser known challenge we have on windy days... launching the balloon in 50 mph wind gusts! 🎈👀
Successful? Yes. Graceful? We'll let you decide. (Note: no meteorologists were blown away in the making of this video.😉) #dfwwx#txwx#BalloonWrangling
New research shows with 95% certainty that global reductions of ozone-depleting substances is responsible for ozone recovery. "By something like 2035, we might see a year when there’s no ozone hole depletion at all in the Antarctic," says Susan Solomon.

This is still, by far, the weirdest thing I have ever seen on radar. I still have almost no clue what is going on here. Towards the end it looks like whatever it's detecting "stretches" to the south.. almost like it's dealing with some ridiculous super-refraction that suddenly resolves. Any smart radar people have ANY ideas here?
Had to go to NHC this morning to drop off my work computer and CAC to be sent back to EMC. It was a sad moment that hit me with the reality of the injustice that has happened to me, many others in NOAA and elsewhere, and ultimately the American people.
On a happier note I also got to go talk to a middle school science class this morning about weather and hurricanes. That's always a lot of fun and a great way to start building a new generation of leaders in our field :)
NOAA cuts happening now. An example: Andy worked for the Hurricane Research Division for years and is one of the primary folks that improved the HAFS hurricane models (very helpful last year w/Milton & Helene). According to LinkedIn, he went to NCEP last October ( @TravisABC13 )
Probationary employees across @NOAA and the @NWS are being terminated today, including those in mission-essential roles.
My own wife is among them, essential to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's 24/7 critical mission of seismic monitoring and tsunami prediction to protect the public.
Remember, most of the NWS is understaffed as it is. While there surely is waste to be found, this is not where to look. Indeed, this is not "looking." This is a blind swing of a sword.
I am back at the US Capitol meeting with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle despite the news of the firings of 100s of meteorologists from the National Weather Service and NOAA. I’m going to continue to fight for our close-knit weather community. Everything NWS does matter!
Firing personnel at @NWS and @NOAA for no other reason than they've been in their current role less than 1-2 years will directly impact the safety of the American public. These agencies were already understaffed yet working tirelessly to achieve their mission. Utter. Lunacy.

Head of @SECGov Crypto Task Force @HesterPeirce Reveals Possibility of "Retroactive Relief" for Token Issuers "The Task Force also is thinking about the possibility of recommending Commission action to provide temporary prospective and retroactive relief for coin or token offerings for which the issuing entity or some other entity willing to take responsibility provides certain specified information, keeps that information updated, and agrees not to contest the Commission’s jurisdiction in the event of a case alleging fraud ."
In the Bitcoin world where Miners Eat First, whatever the miners (collectively) say goes. Bitcoin Core developers can and do propose changes to the Bitcoin network---some good, some bad---but its up to the miners to ultimately participate.
It should not be much different in the Solana world just b/c we have the Solana foundation and Anza. Blockchains are social consensus engines powered by cryptography. Immutability really means immutable until the majority says otherwise.
This was and always has been the contract.
as some of you have seen, the SEC has decided to sue us and @helium literally as they are walking out of the door. the last gasp of a failed crusade against crypto companies in the US
naturally, none of the claims hold any water at all. the SEC has wasted two years of our time and millions of our dollars pursuing any claim they could think of. first it was that the coverage map was fake, then that the cellular radios weren't really cellular, then that the IOT hotspots didn't really work, literally chasing anything that might stick
eventually they decided that wireless access points must be securities (lol), and that if you share your location data using @helium_mobile and get paid for it that is somehow bad. apparently they would rather let the big telco guys steal your data for free and fine them for it later
the icing on the cake is that we somehow defrauded our Series D investors, despite literally all of them telling the SEC that none of that happened. we've addressed this in the past, and have worked with every company on Helium mentioned in the complaint. apparently written testimonials from the companies themselves are insufficient for Gensler and his goons
I don't get angry very often, but this is a blood boiling sequence of events. there's so much more I could say, but it's probably better if I don't
we'll defend ourselves vigorously and continue the Gensler SEC's track record of miserable losses and outright lies. not just for us, but for all DePIN projects. if Helium hotspots are securities, it puts all DePINs in danger. we won't allow that to happen
I'm not remotely concerned. just pissed off
fight ✊🛡️
