Keith Babin. South Park. VA Apartments.
Southside, Houston, 1987.
Keith Babin was one of Houston’s most infamous kingpins in the mid 80s through the early 90s. Keith is originally from Louisiana, and when his parents split up, he relocated to Houston with his mother. From the age of 12-18, Keith lived with his father in Ohio, where he played sports.
Returning to Houston at 18 with a year of high school left, Keith was unable to participate in athletics because he was turning 19, and lost his motivation to go to school. Keith created his own schedule and went to school when he wanted. Upon graduation, Keith worked at a warehouse making around $9.75 an hour in the 80’s. Now a father, Keith had to provide for his children, and after his bills he had as little as 17 cents in his bank account.
A childhood friend named Roger borrowed a few hundred dollars from Keith and flipped it into a couple thousand. Roger didn’t tell Keith initially what he was doing to flip the money, until one day Keith asked. Roger was a drug dealer.
Roger didn’t want Keith to get into the drug game, but Keith told him there was nothing that was going to convince him to stay away from the potential money to be made. Keith left his job and got into the streets. Another friend name Blair, would help Keith take his enterprise to the next level, becoming millionaires overnight. Keith was making $200K-300K daily. Keith’s business would land him in prison for 16 years, after his 27 year sentence was cut down due to the changes in law.
