In 1976, Lal Bihari was a farmer living in Northern India when he "died" at the age of 21. Bihari found out about his death when he applied for a loan and was denied, discovering that he was listed as deceased in official government files. He lost everything, his land, his money, and almost all his possessions. In the eyes of the law, he was dead, and as a result was a nobody.
Lal Bihari was one of many victims of this kind of fraud in India. Typically, a fraudster will bribe a government worker to have a death certificate drawn up against a victim, then perhaps bribe another government worker to have that person's land, possessions, and assets deeded to the crook. As it turns out, Lal Bihari was cheated by his own uncle, who was able to take everything Lal owned for a mere $100.
While this may seem like a bizarre situation, in India it is not uncommon. There are tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of walking dead in India, all of whom, like Bihari, lost everything to fraud, and found themselves in a legal grey area where they have no rights, no property, and no possessions. Due to their circumstances, it is almost impossible to obtain credit, a drivers license, a passport, access to government services, proof of ownership over anything, and employment. Such people have no rights, as technically they don't exist.
Unfortunately, reversal of death in India is not easy with India's slow government. Such a process could take years, perhaps decades. Lal Bihari found that out the hard way he tried to reverse his death, only to be denied by government officials and ruled against by judges. With no evidence proving he was alive, and all official documentation proving he was dead, he was almost helpless against the system.
After failing to get results the legal way, Bihari decided to raise hell and make his voice heard that he was indeed alive. He arranged his own funeral, applied for a widow's pension for his wife, kidnapped the son of the uncle who stole his land, threatened murder, threw leaflets at lawmakers, publicly insulted judges, and even tried running for Prime Minister. He went so far as to add the word "Mritak"-- meaning "dead"-- to the end of his name. After 18 years of death, his voice was finally heard, and he was declared by the Indian government to be alive once again.
Ever since his resurrection, Lal Bihari has been busy campaigning for those who share his circumstances. He has since founded the Uttar Pradesh Association of Dead People, a political group which advocates for the restoration of legal rights and property rights for the living dead in India. At last count, the organization had 20,000 members and was responsible for bringing 30 people back from the dead.
