In February we lost our dear friend and colleague, Aisha Uduman, to a rare form of brain cancer (diffuse midline glioma). Aisha was a wonderful human and inspired so many of us in so many ways. 1/5
She was one of the first @wildco_lab graduate students and completed innovative, interdisciplinary thesis research on the conservation of endangered Sri Lankan leopards, considering both the animals and the people living alongside them. 2/5
Aisha continued to pursue her passion for protecting wildlife and making the world a better place as a species at risk biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. A testament to her impact is seen in the recent naming of a humpback whale in her honour: https://t.co/eGhs9WLhiv 3/5
Aisha left us too soon, but lives on in our hearts & minds. I am comforted that her memory will be honoured through the Aisha S. Uduman Memorial Fund, celebrating her passion for wildlife & environment by providing support for other graduate students in @ubcforestry. 4/5
Please consider donating to Aisha’s memorial fund and/or sharing it with others who may be in a position to do so. It is a fitting tribute to a wonderful woman. https://t.co/dc7dcKg9ZB 5/5

Big congratulations to @KatieTjaden for successfully defending her MSc thesis today!! 👏🎉 Impressive #cameratrap research on "Understanding drivers of caribou decline and feral horse dynamics in the Chilcotin Plateau of British Columbia". 🐎🦌🌲📷
Check out the latest issue of @ubcforestry Branchlines for this great feature on WildCo research assistant @_LiamBrennan_ 📷🦌🐻(and other cool stories too!)

Check out this paper on wildlife activity during COVID, written by (current and former) members of WildCo along with >200 of their closest camera-trapping friends!
#NewPaper: Working with a huge team of 220 co-authors representing 102 projects in 21 countries, we analyzed data from 5400 #cameratraps to ask how #wildlife behaviours changed during the COVID-19 “anthropause” https://t.co/1VW9b7CI6i ..1/
Great read from @fennell_mitch! Mitchell's work used camera trap data to create spatiotemporal models and investigate potential interactions between human recreational activity and habitat use of eight different mammals in the region.
Check it out:

WildCo PI @cole_burton was recently part of a feature on @CBCNews The National about increasing conflicts between people and black bears. Watch for WildCo #cameratrap images that are helping us learn more about bear behaviours in changing environments

Need to set #cameratraps where there are no trees? No problem!
@wildco_lab members got creative with some high elevation sets in alpine ecosystems this summer (📷: @cole_burton & Zoe Konanz)
Who else has some "unconventional" camera sets to share? 👀
#NewPaper by members of @WildCAM_Network: We synthesized data from 446 #cameratraps📷across 10 landscapes in western Canada, finding limited support for the “human shield hypothesis”🛡️that outdoor recreation🥾would repel predators 🐺and attract prey🦌...1/4
Interested in a fantastic #postdoc fellowship in 🇨🇦? The @wildco_lab@ubcforestry is looking for postdocs in 2024 in terrestrial #mammal#conservation, incl themes such as caribou recovery, carnivore coexistence, recreation ecology, monitoring methods and more!🐺🐻🦌📷🐾 lmk 🤙
In partnership with BC Parks, we recently deployed numerous wildlife camera traps across Mt. Robson Provincial Park to document and further investigate how animal behaviour may change in response to recreation. PC: @_LiamBrennan_
