#Sfedoni Cave is #UNESCO protected. Used since the Neolithic era, its resplendent depths are home to unique species and, the legend goes, the bones of a sacrificed young child.

This sheltered beach was used as a Venetian port, as ruins of the old tax office and well attest. A tamarisk tree and wall caves provide shade.

How we long to return to this remote beach, aromatic pines cascade onto sloping sands on #Crete's rugged southern coast, with a bottle of red and a bivvy. There was nobody in sight. #WildGuide

The morning sun rises above our camp on Agiofarago Beach - an incredibly atmospheric place, cradled by towering headlands at the mouth of a canyon sharing its name. All the better for having shared our fire with some stranded German travellers!

A quiet, sandy beach speckled with flowers. A romantic place for a sunrise, sunset or both over some food and a bottle of wine (even if you don't have a date).

This curious patio feels private and wild at once, tucked by the highway overlooking charming Agios Nikolaos to the northwest. We returned in the morning for this shot, after spending two darkening hours excavating the car from a perilously narrow, cliff-sided track.

The peaceful Dalabelos Estate focuses on Cretan produce, crafts and countryside. Overlooking the 900 olive trees after a workshop and an estate-produced banquet is the good life distilled.

This beach offers ample reward for the hike in. #Cretan palms, pristine water and a narrow jetty give the feel of an elaborate hideaway. A stunning refuge.
