The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Engineers Battalion has handed over a bridge it was constructing on Shire River to Roads Authority (RA).
The 67-metre bridge, which connects Neno and Blantyre, replaces the one which was washed away in 2019.
βThe world is not short of financial resources to tackle climate change, what is lacking is goodwill and urgency.β
At the 5th Africa Regional Conference on Loss & Damage, PACJAβs Head of Programs & Research, Charles Mwangi, delivered a clear message: Africa is facing devastating floods, droughts, and loss of lives, yet remains underfunded and unsupported.
With less than $1B committed to the Loss & Damage Fund against billions needed, the call is urgent: scale up finance, ensure access, and deliver justice for frontline communities.
The pressure must continue!

In Uganda, seasonal floods, landslides, and prolonged rains are predictable hazards that repeatedly displace low-income communities in informal settlements and rural areas. Yet response financing often comes only after homes are destroyed and families rendered homeless.
We affirm that anticipatory action through pre-arranged financing triggered by early warnings is a smart and rights-based approach. Investing in climate-resilient housing, settlement upgrading, drainage systems, and pre-positioned emergency shelter protects vulnerable Ugandans before disaster strikes.
Housing justice demands prevention, not reaction. It makes sense to fund resilience rather than disasters.
