Universities haven’t helped because as institutions they’ve fully signed up to the idea that what matters is (a) skills and (b) student experience. But the anti-education culture pervades all society. If it didn’t, we’d value education for education’s sake.
Nice though it is to see that a physics degree does more for your income at 35 than one in law or business, isn’t it time that the higher education sector pushed back hard on the notion that its main benefit to society is the earnings of individuals?
