ngl it’s kinda wild that China is the land of hypercapitalist competition fueled by open-weight models anyone can use, and America is the land where the executive branch of government must personally approve you to have the privilege of giving a private company your money
i miss fable already and disagree completely with this move by the US govt.
if it wasn't already clear, running models locally is the only way forward.
@mckaywrigley Happy to test! I use Claude Code/Cowork daily and have built a second brain that I rely on for daily prioritization and managing multiple workflows. Would like to compare it with what I have created.
Agency > Intelligence
I had this intuitively wrong for decades, I think due to a pervasive cultural veneration of intelligence, various entertainment/media, obsession with IQ etc. Agency is significantly more powerful and significantly more scarce. Are you hiring for agency? Are we educating for agency? Are you acting as if you had 10X agency?
Grok explanation is ~close:
“Agency, as a personality trait, refers to an individual's capacity to take initiative, make decisions, and exert control over their actions and environment. It’s about being proactive rather than reactive—someone with high agency doesn’t just let life happen to them; they shape it. Think of it as a blend of self-efficacy, determination, and a sense of ownership over one’s path.
People with strong agency tend to set goals and pursue them with confidence, even in the face of obstacles. They’re the type to say, “I’ll figure it out,” and then actually do it. On the flip side, someone low in agency might feel more like a passenger in their own life, waiting for external forces—like luck, other people, or circumstances—to dictate what happens next.
It’s not quite the same as assertiveness or ambition, though it can overlap. Agency is quieter, more internal—it’s the belief that you *can* act, paired with the will to follow through. Psychologists often tie it to concepts like locus of control: high-agency folks lean toward an internal locus, feeling they steer their fate, while low-agency folks might lean external, seeing life as something that happens *to* them.”
What most young people don’t know about careers is you need ONE breakout success (or company) to change your entire trajectory..
And, this is true for operating AND venture. If you join at the right moment and do well, your entire past is replaced with that “high point”.
It’s very rare to do it again and again - especially 0 to 1 - and that’s why I have a lot of respect for people who continuously reinvent themselves.
This is insane:
We must received some MASSIVE downward jobs revisions.
May’s jobs report was revised down by 125,000, from +144,000 to +19,000.
June’s jobs report was revised down by 133,000, from +147,000 to +14,000.
That’s 258,000 jobs that just vanished from the data in 2 MONTHS.
What is happening here?
cursor recently blocked several competitor extensions, but you can still run the augment code extension in cursor with this workaround:
1. install augment in vs code
2. download the augment .vsix file
3. run `cursor --install-extension ~file_location` in the terminal
augment still has too many use cases in my workflows for me to drop it just yet.
