On this day in 1794 the French Republic guillotined Antoine Lavoisier. He had named oxygen, formulated the law of conservation of mass and founded modern chemistry.
Appeals were rejected with the line "the Republic has no need of scientists."
The next day Lagrange said: "It took only a moment to cause this head to fall, and a hundred years will not suffice to produce its like."
Louis Jacques Thénard, chemist, was born on this date in 1777. For his keen advocacy of industrial development, Thénard, earned a notorious role in Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. He is one of 72 #scientists and #engineers named on the #eiffeltower. #otd https://t.co/tI2RfDhqwn

In the 19th century physicist Simeon Poisson tried to argue that light was made of particles. He claimed that if light were a wave, it would bend around an object and create a bright spot right in the center of a shadow, which he considered obviously ridiculous. So he declared wave theory effectively dead.
The problem was that his colleague Augustin-Jean Fresnel actually performed the experiment, observed exactly that bright spot, and proved Poisson completely wrong.
Today, this phenomenon is known as the “Poisson spot.”
