Windows Phone turns 15 years old today, October 21, 2025!
Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 7 on October 21, 2010, marking a fresh start for its mobile ambitions after Windows Mobile.
It looked beautiful for its time with Live Tiles, smooth animations, and a clean Metro design that inspired later versions of Windows. Nokia soon joined the party, launching the Lumia lineup that became iconic among fans.
Sadly, the dream didn’t last. Despite loyal users and great cameras, the app gap hurt adoption. Microsoft tried again with Windows Phone 8, then Windows 10 Mobile, but developers had already moved on. By 2017, the company confirmed it would stop active development, and by 2020, all support ended.
Fifteen years later, we still remember Windows Phone for its bold design and smooth experience.
