The Real Story of Urdu

There is a pointless fight going on again, on X Spaces, about Urdu — is it the language of Muslims, is it the language of Pakistan? And it tells you how little we know about our own languages.

Urdu was not born in Mecca, nor was it imported from Islamabad. It was born right here, in the dusty bazaars and soldier camps and streets of Delhi and Awadh. The mother tongue was the same Khariboli that gave us Hindi, mixed with Braj and the local bolis. Because the court spoke Persian, Persian words came in. Because scholars used Arabic, Arabic words came in. The soldiers in the Mughal lashkar called it Ordu, camp, and from there we got the name Urdu. But for centuries it was just called Hindavi, Dehlavi, Rekhta — the language of Hindustan.

It never belonged to a religion. In Lucknow and Delhi, it became the language of tehzeeb, of the elite, but that elite was both Hindu and Muslim. The Kayastha munshi wrote his petitions in Urdu, the Kashmiri Pandit wrote his poetry in Urdu, the Muslim poet wrote his ghazals in Urdu. Premchand started as an Urdu writer. Firaq Gorakhpuri, Chakbast, Raghupati Sahay — all Hindus — are pillars of Urdu. And Rahim, who wrote some of the finest Hindi dohas, was a Muslim.

We speak today as if Hindi and Urdu are two different languages. On the street they are not. What you and I speak in Delhi, Lucknow, Patna — that Hindustani — is both. The split is artificial, created on paper. One was given Devanagari and Sanskrit words, the other was given Nastaliq and Persian words. The heart of the language remained one.

The religious colour came later, from politics, not from poetry. When the British replaced Persian and then played the script game, and when Partition gave Urdu to Pakistan as its national language even though hardly any Pakistani spoke it as a mother tongue, we in India began to believe that Urdu is theirs and Hindi is ours. It is a lie that has lasted 75 years.

Urdu is not the language of Muslims. It is not the language of Pakistan. It is the language of North India, a melange like Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Haryanvi — born in this soil, raised in Delhi and Avadh, and still as Indian as any language can be.

Cases have been brought against some Congress leaders—notably Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler—but so far no senior politician or police officer has been sentenced.

Fresh evidence that figures in this piece suggests the orders for the violence came from the member of parliament Arun Nehru, a cousin and confidante of Indira Gandhi’s son and successor Rajiv. While this evidence is indirect testimony, it is strengthened by a considerable amount of circumstantial evidence available in the Misra and Nanavati reports. It also suggests that the conspiracy that led to the organised violence and the disjuncture between the commissions’ records and their findings are not two separate aspects of the tragedy—one followed from the other.
