A female entrepreneur, during a time when few women were even in the workforce, Eugenia Thomas Duke began selling sandwiches with her homemade mayonnaise in 1917 to soldiers at Camp Sevier. Her sandwiches cost a dime. She made a profit of 2 cents per sandwich.
