A stranger grabbed my wrist in a hospital corridor and begged me not to tell his wife I was there.

I'd never seen the man before in my life.

I was at the hospital visiting a friend when he rushed out of a ward, saw me, and immediately pulled me aside.

“Please, just pretend you don't know me,” he whispered. “If she asks, you've never seen me.”

Before I could ask what he was talking about, a woman walked out of the ward carrying a little girl.

The man quickly stepped away from me.

The woman looked at him, then at me.

“You two know each other?” she asked.

“No,” I replied.

The man exhaled as though I'd just saved his life.

I should have walked away. It wasn't my business, and I didn't want trouble with strangers.

But as the woman passed me, the little girl looked back and said something that made me turn around.

“Daddy, is that the man from your pictures?”

The corridor went silent.

The woman stopped walking.

I stared at the man. He looked like he was about to faint.

“Which pictures?” his wife asked.

The little girl pointed directly at me.

“The ones Daddy keeps in his drawer. He said that man was the reason he left his old family.”

I had never met this man. I had no idea who his old family was.

Then the woman slowly turned toward him and asked a question.

“Didn't you tell me your first son died?”

The man didn't answer.

Because at that moment, he was staring at the small scar on my forehead.

The same scar I'd had since childhood.

And the next words out of his mouth changed everything I thought I knew about my father.
