@RicFinlay@dgriffinpix@ACScricket@DerbyshireCCC@Gloscricket That's quite an intelligent household. I met Chris when I was a roomie for Tasmania U19s in 1992/93. He and Tasmania didn't have a great championships but he was so nice to me.
@WinfieldCup This clip is a perfect summary of Ray Warren's commentary. Incorrectly analyses the play, creates a metaphor that makes no sense, and then gets the tryscorer's name wrong.
@LeagueTees I was once told by a sports journalist that Bob Lindner's wife left him for a woman. No idea if that's her in the photo or even if the story is true. Just putting this here in case anyone knows the story.
@JasonBennettTV My very unscientific theory:
CV = commentator volume
CN = crowd noise
CV + CN = optimum sound level for big moments.
I'm finding that it sounds better to go bigger when there's no crowd but simpler is better when the crowd is telling the story.
Thoughts?
@CraigNorenbergs@ringer Is it possible that the writer/s didn't really want to write another 'listicle'? Or perhaps this was the backup plan after they had to postpone their article on Venezuelan sports funding.
@ACTCricketStats I'm going to get the "picked a Turner but not a spinner" joke out of the way so it's not tormenting me.
Looks like Hugh Trumble was only 20 at the time. He'd end any thought of an Australian spin drought for a while.
Beau Webster comes in for Jhye Richardson; Matty Potts comes in for Gus Atkinson. No Australian spinner - I've trawled back over every SCG Test, and the first one I can find with no recognised spinner - February 1888!!
@ashestoarchive Eventually, the law-makers this was silly and changed it so that this situation would be scored as 2 leg byes. I was taught the old way during my umpiring course in 1999.
According to Test umpires I've met, Waugh not knowing a law was typical, and Bailhache was not very nice.
@ashestoarchive Ok, this was in 1988 before current laws about adding one to sundries scored off a no-ball were drafted. Umpires first had to signal no-ball, then, if the batter didn't hit the ball, signal bye regardless of whether it would ordinarily have been a bye or leg-bye. (cont'd.)
