4/4 Steve Albini was a working class intellectual, a no-bullshit voice of reason, a generous teacher, and a transcendent recording engineer, with a sharp, biting wit and a sense of humor. Lucky to have so much treasured music created and/or recorded by him. A great loss.

3/4 I remember hearing the first Shellac 7" for the first time-- how the sound of that recording jumped out of the speakers like nothing I had ever heard. He raised the bar massively for the quality of indie band recordings, and drum sounds more specifically.

2/4 ...Cut to a year of two later, when a friend brought over a VHS tape of the band playing live in Seattle. Seeing those biting, bitter lines coming from this scrawny, nerdy punk rocker, I was struck by the satirical brilliance of it all. Big Black soon became a staple for me.
